This series of medical illustrations shows how lower back pain caused by a herniated lumbar disc may be relieved by Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET). On the left side are drawings showing the injury, a left-sided herniation of the L4-L5 intervertebral disc (disk). On the right are four images showing how an IDET needle and electrode are inserted into the disc material, creating a seal of scar tissue to stop further herniation of the nucleus pulposus.
