Mitral Valve Endocarditis with Resulting Cerebral Embolus - Medical Illustration, Human Anatomy Drawing
This stock medical exhibit describes mitral valve endocarditis with resulting cerebral embolus. The first image is an anterior cut-away view of the heart allowing us to see the chambers and valves. There is a 2 cm area of endocarditis on the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve, and emboli are shown breaking off and being carried along by the blood into the aorta. The next image shows a silhouette of a patient with the heart, aorta, and blood supply to the brain clearly visible. Arrows describe the path of the emboli through the aorta, to the subclavian artery, to the vertebral artery, and into the smaller vessels of the brain. The final image shows the brain with a darkened area representing ischemia due to the emboli becoming lodged in the smaller vessels of the brain.
